Delivering throughout the tournament

Historically, big events have caused big disruptions for many commercial delivery businesses. Roads are closed and airspace restrictions are put in place as tens of thousands of fans gather to watch a game. These extended restrictions have kept many in the surrounding area from being able to get last minute deliveries, or to travel to the store for gametime snacks.  As drone delivery continues to be further integrated into the day-to-day environment in many cities, there is now a need for regulators to find ways to work with delivery companies to enable safe delivery,  and we’ve just seen what that future can look like. 

As a safe, secure, and authorized Part 135 Air carrier, Wing reached a major milestone in drone delivery during the FIFA World Cup. Thanks to our strong working relationship with the FAA and DHS, we secured authorization to fly in restricted airspace during the tournament—including within Temporary Flight Restriction (TFR) areas. As a result, Wing delivered throughout the World Cup in Dallas and Charlotte, which hosted matches and base camps for participating teams, helping our customers get the items they needed in the most efficient way even during some of the most exciting moments of the tournament.

This tight coordination ensured our customers received their deliveries without disruption, even amidst the heightened security of a global sporting event. It’s a meaningful step forward in securing airspace while enabling authorized, innovative users to operate efficiently.

Flying beyond a proof of concept

This isn’t just a win for Wing; it’s a landmark moment for the evolution of safe drone delivery across the United States. By successfully integrating our services into the high-stakes environment of a global tournament, the federal government is demonstrating a vital capability: the power to safely enable commercial drone operations while securing restricted areas against potential threats. It shows that with the right technology, collaboration and common-sense regulations, we can protect the public, maintain security and deliver progress all at once.

From June 16 through July 15, Wing made nearly a thousand deliveries within the TFRs in Dallas and Charlotte, helping fans get the snacks and last-minute products they needed to help them get the most out of the tournament.
