Wings lightweight delivery drones are designed to be among the safest ways to transport goods.

By moving small packages through the air rather than on the road, we aim to reduce the frustrations and risks associated with traditional delivery. One of our safety objectives is to maintain a lower risk to the public than conventional ground transportation. To date, Wing has safely completed well over one million on-demand deliveries.

Wing has spent more than a decade designing and building aircraft with safety as our first priority.

Lightweight design

Our FAA approved drones are made mostly of foam and are designed to be lightweight, leading the industry in payload to aircraft weight efficiencies.

Redundancy

The design includes multiple levels of redundancy to keep the aircraft in the air even if a component fails.

Real-time checks

Onboard software conducts constant health and safety checks during every flight.

Certified pilots

Before overseeing any operations, our pilots complete FAA-approved training so they're ready to make important safety decisions about local weather and air traffic.

How Wing Drone Delivery Works

Wing uses intelligent flight planning to chart the safest route, avoiding obstacles and restricted airspace.

Once a customer places an order, items are securely loaded onto the drone.
The drone climbs vertically to a cruising altitude, typically 150 feet above the ground, with FAA approval to fly up to 400 feet.
Following a predetermined flight plan, the drone cruises at speeds up to approximately 60 mph.
Upon arrival, the drone descends and hovers at about 25 feet, using a winch and tether system to gently lower the package to the ground without landing.
The drone automatically releases the package, retracts the tether, and returns to the charging pad between missions.

Contingency planning

Much like a car pulling over in response to a dashboard warning, our drones are programmed to take safety measures if a mission cannot be completed as planned.

Contingency Actions: The drone can abort the delivery and return to the nest or carry out what’s called a contingency landing, or a slow, controlled landing.

Preferred Landing Zones: During a contingency landing, Wing’s drones are designed to aim for areas less likely to have people or traffic, such as trees or fields.

Rapid Recovery: Wing personnel are immediately dispatched to recover any drone that performs a contingency landing.

Found Drones: If you locate a Wing drone that has performed a contingency landing, call +1-650-946-1669 immediately. Please do not touch the aircraft unless you are an emergency responder.

Advancing the modern airspace

Industry-first permissions

Wing leads the industry in flight permissions and regulatory compliance, holding a Part 135 Air Carrier Certificate from the FAA, a standard similar to those required for cargo airliners. Wing was one of the first operators approved for Beyond Visual Line of Sight (BVLOS) flights, allowing for expanded service area while maintaining safety.

Sharing the airspace

We use Unmanned Aircraft System Traffic Management (UTM) to share the skies with fellow drone operators and ADS-B technology, the aviation standard for location communication, to detect and avoid traditional aircraft. Wing operates across major U.S. metros, and issues Notice to Air Missions (NOTAMs) for all locations with operating areas and hours.

Drone as First Responder

Wing works closely with Drone as First Responder (DFR) agencies across all of our operating areas. Wing yields to DFR drone activity when we are aware of the operations, either autonomously through UTM or via manual coordination.
